Last week I told all my students that I would be going back to America on the 9th. They all asked for my email address. One girl wrote me a lengthy email. She said it took her 1.5 hours to write. It confused me. I didn't reply so she sent me another one. She then got mad at me for not responding to her. Anyone out there how speaks Incoherent Mumbo-Jumbo let me know what these mean:

Wearing Shorts to work

I packed all my pants and I only had shorts to wear to work today. The kids were fascinated with my leg hair. One girl drew this picture of me.
Another boy really like the shorts, too. He said, "Teacher Raymond, you're so cool. You're so cool. Don't go to America. You're so smart. Your brain must weigh 10,000 kilograms." I'm going to miss my daily dose of ego boost when I leave my students.

Engagement

I didn't want to tell all of you important news through my blog. I've been so busy, and I haven't had time to make phone calls in a really, really long time. But this is imprtant and I want all my friends and family to know. I told my Ma and Pa, so all the family may know already.

When Jaesun found out she had a job we got to talking about our future together. We would be apart for three years. We needed to talk about how serious we were about each other. The more we talked, the more it became evident that we both wanted to get married. Not now, but later when we both have our careers on track.

Last week, Jaesun asked her parents if we could get married someday. They said, "Not right now." We weren't planning on that anyway. They didn't say "No" which is good, but I still pouted like a baby because they didn't say "Yes." Jaesun's parents want to meet my mom and dad at least two times before they give their consent. They want to travel to the US once, and they want to see my parents in Korea once. I'm excited for that.

So while the engagement isn't official in Jaesun's parents eyes, it is official in ours. Her parents did give their consent to us getting engaged just between us two, but it's not a real deal to them until all four parents get involved.

The Psychic

Sorry that it's taken me so long to write about this.

Jaesun and I went to see a psychic for our 100 day anniversary. The lady used our birthdays and time of birth to tell us our future. Here is what she said:

-I would be leaving Korea for my home country by the end of the year. True
-I would be entering a credentialing program for my future career. True
-Teaching is a good career for me, but I would also do well in the financial field. She said to stay away from sales, because I would be terrible at it.
-My health will be good throughout my life. My children will be strong and healthy. My wife will be ill, but I will be able to provide care for her.
-I have a good personality, and people like me.

-Jaesun will have a very good fortune for the next five years.
-She needs to move out of her parents house, and preferably out of Korea.
-She shouldn't get married in Korea for the next five years.
-She will do well in a job where she interacts with many people each day (like a bar propieter)
-She has a good personality, but not as good as mine (haha)
-She will not have great health, so she must take extra care of her stomach

As for the both of us:
-We will be very happy for the rest of this year
-Next year we will have some problems. She said Jaesun loses interest in things she thinks won't happen and there is a possibility of this next year. If we make it through 2007, we will do well.
-She gave us a 70-80% chance of making it to marriage

I know she told us more, but I can't remember it. Jaesun is better at remembering things like this. I was pretty impressed with her comment about me entering the credentialing program.

100th Post

This is the 100th post of Deep Kimchi. It is also almost the last post. So sad.

Today, I was walking home from work. I was walking along the main road but it was too noisy so I wanted to walk on the side street away from the traffic. I turned and there were two trucks parked on the sidewalk. I saw two legs behind the tires of one of the trucks. I walked closer and saw that there was a guy lying on ground next the truck tires. I made sure he was breathing, he was, so I walked on. He clearly hadn't been run over by the truck, so I assumed he was passed out drunk.

If I had been in any other place besides Daun-dong, Ulsan, I probably would have made sure he was okay. But street sleeping is very common in my neighborhood. My neighbor, how is the president of a masonry company, once told me, "Raymond! Weather is warm. Time for street sleeping!" I never had the opportunity to do it, and my time is running out here. Maybe I will have to try it out in Bakersfield.
